The David Lam Chair in Multicultural Education is an endowed Chair established in 1998 by the Honourable David Lam, former Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, and the Governments of British Columbia and Canada. The Chair enables the Faculty of Education to provide leadership in research, teaching, and application of knowledge about multicultural education.
Professor Handel Kashope Wright is the current David Lam Chair (2006-2009). Past David Lam Chairs have included Professor Graeme Chalmers (2001-2004)); Dr. Ishu Ishiyama (1998-2001), and Professor Kogila Adam-Moodley (1995-1998).
Each holder of the Chair adopts a rationale for the position, including its thematic foci and objectives. Currently, the Chair’s focus is twofold: comparative multiculturalism, especially in terms of Canada-Australia relations; and the intersection of multiculturalism with related discourses (anti-racism, critical pedagogy, transnationalism, diaspora studies, cosmopolitanism, etc.) and how these intersections might be utilized in the promotion of local cultural and activist work as well as in the context of collaborative research undertaken at the local, national and global levels.
